Toppled TV Sets Injuring Children, Experts Say

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Children are being seriously injured by television sets that can easily be toppled from their stands, two physicians reported Wednesday.

"Most of the injuries we've seen are in very young children who try to climb up the stand to reach the television set, presumably because they're attracted by the colors and sounds," said Gerald Karcher of Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

A second doctor, Marcelle Piccolello of Rhode Island Hospital-Hasbro Children's Hospital, reported injuries to 15 children ranging in age from 15 months to 8 years from the same thing.

"Parents who care for young children should be aware of this danger and ensure that their television sets are in a cabinet or placed on a secure stand that cannot be toppled," Piccolello said.

The two suggested that today's TV sets are lighter weight, making them easier to pull down. The findings were disclosed at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
